Getting Started
What to Expect at Your First Martial Arts Class
Thinking about trying a class but not sure what happens when you walk in? Here's how to get started at Trillium MMA, step by step.

Walking into a martial arts gym for the first time is a big step. Maybe you've never thrown a punch, or it's been years since your last workout. That's completely normal, and it's exactly who our beginner-friendly classes are built for. Here's what to expect, from signing up to stepping off the mats.
Two ways to get started
Option 1: a one-week trial. Test drive our regular classes for a week for only $30. Signing up a child? Kids and youth classes start with one free class.
Option 2: the 6-Week Beginner Course. If you have no martial arts experience or athletic background, our Beginner Course teaches the fundamentals of striking, grappling and self-defense in a beginner-only group, with no hard sparring. It's currently offered at our Scarborough location.
Not sure which is right for you? Send us a message and we'll help you choose.
Before your first class
- Choose a location. We train in Scarborough (770 Birchmount Rd) and Markham (343 Rodick Rd). See our locations.
- Choose a class. Check the Scarborough or Markham schedule for days and times, and note the age group and skill level of each class.
- Register. Register your information and pick the date you'd like to start.
- Check your inbox. You'll get a welcome email that tells you what to wear and bring.
When you arrive
Plan to arrive 5–10 minutes before class. Our staff will give you a quick tour and introduction, so you won't be walking onto the mats cold.
Then it's time to train. You'll learn real techniques through structured drills and partner work, and nobody expects you to know anything yet. Our members come from all ages, sizes and backgrounds, and every one of them had a first class too.
"The coaches are incredibly supportive. They push you, encourage you, and make you laugh, and the members are driven yet never make you feel out of place, no matter your goals or skill level." — Joy O., Trillium MMA member
Tips for a great first class
- Don't wait until you're "in shape." Training builds your fitness, and our Beginner Course is made for people with no athletic background.
- Go at your own pace. Everyone starts somewhere, and progress comes with time.
- Ask questions. Our coaches are there to help you learn.
- Have fun. It really is the last step on our list.
After your first week
If you'd like to keep training after your trial week or Beginner Course, our staff will be happy to help you set up a membership. You can see membership pricing here.
